Autofocus isn’t a matter to me. Sony’s very first full frame digital mirrorless camera, the RX1 was built around this desert island concept because well, you couldn’t put any other lens on it – the Carl Zeiss Sonnar 35mm f/2 lens was literally bolted to the camera. I’ll add that the major difference between the lenses is the bokeh. I wanted to see how much (or little) depth of field I could get in the macro mode. The attraction here is the flexibility of having that f/1.8 aperture and the difference in rendering it provides, with the downside being the larger size – but still compact. BTW, the looking glass feature (“enlarge function”) on your site is truly helpful. 35mm is a desert island lens – the one you would keep if you could have no other. The F1.4 has served me well for quite a few weddings and lots of events…..but now I find I’m using the 24mm F1.4 GM more and more instead. Of course, you can also set everything to “Auto” and let the camera figure out the shot. The Cyber-shot RX1 R II is a demonstration of what Sony’s engineers are capable of. In the following review, I’ll talk about my experiences using the camera but if you want to just cut to the chase you can jump to seeing all the photos I’ve taken with the RX1. Thanks for your reply Chad. I don’t use it for two reasons: 1) it can’t be used when shooting in RAW mode, and 2) I don’t really need it because the files already have a ton of dynamic range (easily pushed/pulled three stops of exposure during post-processing). All you have to do is press the shutter release and slowly pan the camera in an arc to the right. Note to Yoni: on most digital cameras, choice of colour space has no direct effect whatsoever on the data inside raw files for any given (fixed) combination of shutter speed, aperture and ISO setting. On the topic of APS-C, throw this lens on the new a7rIV and you essentially have a two-in-one 35mm/50mm prime kit – that’s 61mp at 35mm and 26mp in crop mode at roughly 50mm! It marries the best of the classic definitive moment reportage concept found in the RX1 to the latest generation of Sony’s impressive autofocus systems in a significant evolutionary leap that is going to put a smile on a lot of faces. Should you buy the Sony RX100 VI? At the end of the day, it is a 24mm lens so you will not get the same OOF rendering as a 35mm at the same subject distance. Could it have to do with the amount of saturation and contrast in the out of focus areas? Ive been using the lens for a couple of weeks now (after selling my 35/2.8) and don’t think there is any image quality benefit to the switch. Size and weight are nearly identical to the FE 55mm/f1.8. A review of sharpness and vignette gets would be a needed addition to truly assess this or any lens – even just samples with 100% crops like Dusting and Phillip provide. No I don’t think you will take an IQ hit. The RX1’s 35mm lens has the ability to focus as close as 0.65′ (0.2m) making it usable for close-up or macro photography. I mainly shoot wedding and engagement photos, and like to take artsy and character pictures. A short question – does colorspace have any effect while shooting RAW? I haven’t had a portrait shoot with it yet but are there instances where you can achieve similar OOF renderings/character with this lens? Right. Image Quality – The Cutting Edge. To my eyes it looks as if the pictures taken with the Sony lens lack depth. I’ve heard that the RX1 Sonnar is actually closer to a 33mm FOV, just as my Samyang 35mm 1.4 (I’ve owned the Samxang 35mm 2.8 too, and there actually is a 2mm difference I’d say). The RX1 is so small that it fits into a tiny shoulder bag or even a large coat pocket. Shooting indoors under low ambient light it sure makes a difference to be able to open up beyond 2.8. Also, THANK YOU for that great review – not only are your shots great as always, but also the whole input when it comes to optics, comparisons to other lenses, etc. In fact, I found noise levels to be on par with images produced by the flagship DSLRs from Nikon or Canon. In pricing, I think the decision is ultimately up to the consumer to determine if the value proposition is there. Paired with an a7/a9 body; the weight, balance and focus performance is a dream. While this is standard operating procedure for most other cameras, the RX1’s optional electronic view finder (EVF) also requires the use of the hotshoe. Makes a good case for the FE as a very pretty optical performer, regardless of the minuscule differences with the renowned Sonnar. Change ), You are commenting using your Google account. The more I shot with this new lens, the more something nagged me, a sense of recognition…could it be that the FE 35mm was designed to match the performance of the beloved 35mm Sonnar on the RX1? I shot the RX1 for two months before buying the EVF and now rarely take it off the camera. And finally, thank you for excellent review! I do however very much enjoy the extra f-stop gain, albeit at the cost of a much bigger size (physical size/dimensions). It’s worth mentioning that when aperture priority is used in conjunction with the “Auto ISO” setting, the RX1 adjusts the ISO up and down to achieve a 1/80th of a second shutter speed to align with the chosen aperture. This creates an “either or” situation where by you can either use an off camera flash trigger or the EVF but not both at the same time. In crop mode, the 24mm bokeh will be more similar to an f/2 lens but retain the light gathering of an f/1.4. Chad has been writing for me on and off for years now and I always enjoy his thoughts and views on these Sony products. I am a happy owner of the RX1R II but your review made me thinking about giving it up for the A7R4 with this lens (bit larger size overall but still ok, and for small bag in sunny days there is the even smaller 35 f2.8). The Sonnar also has excellent bokeh with soft edges and mostly round structure. I guess 24mm GM will be more useful if you use both APSC and FF. Sony RX1R II Hands-on Review. Relying on a camera service when you travel is not a realistic option: servicing a complex, difficult to disassemble camera requires very well trained service personnel, and takes time. Don’t have one here to compare it with but based on my recollection of the 2.8, yes! However (like your choices of contrast, saturation and white balance), colour space does have an effect on the histograms and clipping warnings you see shown on rear LCDs even when shooting raw so in that respect, it might affect things indirectly. I use aperture priority mode a lot of editorial where I don’t have the time to work the exposure or the light is changing quickly. If you turn off the audio cues, a person standing a a foot or more away would never know that you just took a picture. The only thing to keep in mind with eye AF is that it always works best when the eyes are larger in the frame, so wider angle lenses don’t do as well, comparatively, to a portrait or telephoto lens.
